Artist Cape- 1st Grade


Artist Cape, Ideas Hat 

Artist- Ramellzee

Materials- fabric, markers, masking tape, pipe cleaners,  found objects hot glue (administered by teacher)

Essential Questions-  What is art? Why do people make art? How does creating art make you feel? How does looking at art make you feel?

Activity- Students create their own superhero artist cape. Students first sketch an emblem to represent themselves. They then draw this symbol on their cape and assemble with masking tape. Alternatively, student can create hats, belts etc, anything to represent their artistic identity.

Hand Made Quilting with 1st Grade


Pattern, Decoration, Textiles

(part one making)

Artist- Miriam Schapiro, Faith Ringgold
Materials- square cotton fabric scraps (will precut small holes in each corner, markers,
Vocabulary- Collaboration- working together to create something as a community

Project- Students will create a design on scrap material with marker. They are instructed to create a pattern, anything repeats. Enough fabric will be provided so students can work quickly or slowly.

(part two combining)

Vocabulary- Arrangement- how artworks are put together and work as a group
Project- Community Quilting: Working together students will arrange their material pieces in a way that is ‘pleasing.’ Are certain pieces similar in color and design? Should bolder projects be used to create a border? Students will attach the fabric scraps together by threading yarn through precut hole and tying ‘double knots.’

Imagine Create Perform 1st Grade


Ideas are unlimited and students are encouraged to push their imaginations to the limit. Using drawing, painting, sewing and sculpture students will create a whimsical puppet show. Starting with a character students choose a look and personality for their player. Poetry is next; they design a line for their character to rhyme. Working together students build the set. Finally each student performs his or her line in time!

Stain Glass Mandalas 1st Grade



Light, Reflection, Transparency

Artist- Stained Glass from Medieval Europe

Materials- clear paper plate, paints, q-tips

Vocabulary-
Symmetry- same on two or more sides
Pattern- something that repeats
Transparent- see-through

Project- Students create a faux stained glass window decoration using a clear plastic plate and paints. Instructed to create a ‘repeating pattern’ using dotted colors on the circular plate, using their initial markings a guild. Students also consider the sunlight as a design element.
